Pigeon Hunting for Beginners – Everything You Need to Know About Gear and Technique

Getting started with pigeon hunting – a beginner's guide

Pigeon hunting is one of the most popular and accessible forms of hunting in Sweden. The woodpigeon is found across the whole country, and the hunting delivers both fast shooting and very good eating. Below we go through everything you need to get started.

Basic gear for pigeon hunting

Decoys – the foundation of pigeon hunting

The most effective way to hunt woodpigeons is over decoys. Pigeon decoys are set out on the field to convince incoming birds to drop into your area. Silhouette decoys are ideal for beginners – light, affordable and easy to transport. A 12-pack covers a good-sized area.

Pigeon spinner / pigeon magnet

A pigeon spinner (also called a pigeon carousel or pigeon magnet) adds movement to the decoy pattern by rotating birds with their wings spread. Movement is one of the single most important factors for pulling pigeons in from a distance. A good spinner runs on a 12 V motor and is operated with a wireless remote.

Hide

You need a good hide (blind) where you can sit completely concealed. Use at least two camo nets and make sure the back is fully closed off. Pigeons are wary and spot movement immediately. One tip is to invest in a portable hide – you will often need to change position during the hunt.

How to set out the decoys

For the best results:

  • Placement: Face the decoys into the wind. Pigeons, like all birds, land into the wind.
  • Numbers: Start with 10–15 decoys and build the pattern up with shot birds as the hunt goes on.
  • Pattern: Build a horseshoe-shaped decoy pattern with the opening into the wind – that gives the pigeons a natural landing area.
  • Movement: Place a pigeon spinner in or close to the group to bring the pattern to life.

When and where to hunt

Pigeon hunting is at its best in late summer and autumn, when the birds gather on freshly harvested fields. Look for fields the pigeons are already using – scout for a few days before you hunt. Early mornings and late afternoons are usually best, when the birds move between roost and feeding area. Open seasons for woodpigeon differ from country to country, so check the rules that apply where you hunt before you go.

Shotgun and ammunition

Use a shotgun, preferably a semi-automatic or an over-and-under. Shot size 6 or 7 (US numbering, roughly 2.5–2.75 mm) is the standard for pigeon hunting. Pigeons fly fast and unpredictably, so put in some practice on clay targets before the season starts.

With the right decoys and a good spinner you are well equipped for your first pigeon hunt. See our pigeon decoys and our pigeon spinner here.
