Hunting Tips

Start here

Hunting over decoys is not complicated, but a handful of details decide whether birds commit or swing wide at 60 metres. Everything below is written from our own seasons in the field – what worked, what did not, and why. Pick the guide that matches what you are hunting this week.

Building the spread

Wildlife management and after the hunt

Open seasons and bag rules differ from country to country – always check the current rules where you hunt before you go out.

Five things that matter more than the number of decoys

  • Wind before pattern. Set the spread so birds finish into the wind and land in the gap you have left open in front of the hide.
  • Face the silhouettes correctly. Flat silhouettes disappear when viewed edge-on, so angle them so incoming birds see the profile, not the edge. Turning half the spread slightly off-line gives motion at no cost.
  • Hide the shine, not just the shape. A pale face, a phone screen or a shiny gun barrel flares more birds than a badly built hide.
  • Move the spread instead of adding to it. If nothing commits within the first hour, relocate 100–200 metres rather than putting out more decoys.
  • Density beats perfection. Twelve silhouettes in the right place outperform three highly detailed full-body decoys in the wrong place – which is exactly why we build silhouettes.
